LeCun Clarifies: He Left FAIR Leadership in 2018 and Never Worked on LLMs
ylecun · x · 2026-11-02
LeCun clarifies his track record: he founded FAIR in 2013 (Paris 2015, Montreal 2017) but left its leadership in 2018 to become Chief AI Scientist, refocusing on self-supervised learning, JEPA, and world models. Antoine Bordes and Joëlle Pineau co-directed FAIR from 2018–2023. He says he was never involved in LLM research or development (which sat in the GenAI product group); his only LLM contributions were defending Galactica in 2022 and internally championing Llama, built by roughly a dozen FAIR-Paris researchers including Guillaume Lample.
