Ex-PM: AI killed the decision-making PM job, only creativity and selling ideas matter now
signulll · x · 2026-11-02
signulll recalls that PM interviews used to focus entirely on decision-making under constraints—trade-offs, what to build, cheap testing, and often theatrical prioritization—because engineer time was expensive.
He argues that's no longer true. Only two things matter now: (1) creative ideas, unusual taste, or unique understanding of the world, and (2) the ability to sell those ideas. The relative value of originality has never been higher—a single person with a deceptively simple idea can change the game if the surrounding structure enables rather than neutralizes it.
Since consistent iteration and output can be managed extremely efficiently by AI (bug → PR → production loops will soon be fully automated), companies should optimize for creative outliers and invert nearly all legacy processes.
