SAM 3 counts malaria-infected cells: 421/445 red cells but only 72/112 parasites

The author tested Meta's SAM 3 for counting malaria-infected cells from a phone photo of a smear taken at a hospital in Bangladesh — just two prompts ("cell", "purple dot") yielded 28 infected cells vs the expert's 29, hitting 25 of the expert's marks. An honest follow-up across 7 smears from 7 patients: 421/445 red cells counted, but only 72/112 infected cells detected; 3 false positives (a platelet and 2 cells the expert called clean), and misses concentrate on ring-shaped parasites rather than dot-shaped ones. The author asks lab professionals whether they'd use such a tool.
