Karpathy one-shots HackerTube with Opus 5.5: a YouTube clone built from HN-recommended videos
ricklamers · x · 2026-11-01
Tired of YouTube's "slop" recommendations, Andrej Karpathy spent 2 hours with Opus 5.5 in Claude Code to build hackertube.org: the pipeline downloaded all HN comments, filtered spam, extracted 40K video-recommending comments, and yielded 6,454 YouTube videos recommended on HN from 2007-2026 across 150 topics. Features include mid-frame thumbnails instead of clickbait, account-free personalized For You recommendations stored in the browser, keyboard shortcuts, and exportable data so others can build their own version. Karpathy says he no longer writes code or runs terminals—his only manual work was creating a YouTube API key, booting a VPS, and buying the domain.
