David Manheim challenges LLM consciousness skeptic: why assume biology is mysterious but AI isn't?
davidmanheim · x · 2026-11-01
AI safety researcher David Manheim debated @kaleidosbob on whether LLMs are on a path to biological-style consciousness. The skeptic argued biology operates at scales we can't yet capture while AI architectures are abstractions missing substrate-level features, making the comparison category-confused.
Manheim challenged the asymmetry: his opponent treats biology as deeply mysterious despite knowing the underlying physics, yet treats LLMs as fully understood because we know the underlying math. He also noted the framing implies consciousness must be planned to emerge, which is untrue of humans. The exchange ended with Manheim muting the opponent over a gish-gallop.
