'The final death of specialized ML': even robotics got Bitter-Lessoned, says willdepue
willdepue · x · 2026-11-01
willdepue declares "the final death of specialized ML": six months ago he'd have said robotics was the one field that wouldn't be eaten by the "one big model," but it got "Bitter Lessoned out of left field," and protein folding is rumored to be next. Everything, he argues, is just an RL dataset plus a pretraining mix. He adds that even the field's top specialist researchers seem genuinely surprised by the progress — so dismissing it as "just XYZ" misses the point.
