AI doomers are wrong: legacy software modernization will create huge demand for builders
enggirlfriend · x · 2026-11-01
Pushing back on "AI will destroy software jobs" headlines, the author argues the real story is legacy modernization: think of all the terrible software you used last month — airline sites, the DMV, movie ticketing, hospital portals. In five years these could feel as modern as X, Instagram, Linear, or Claude Code.
Key argument: current employees at these institutions can't modernize their own software, so companies will hire agencies or new staff for the upgrade wave — even if job titles differ from today's "software engineer" or "product designer," demand will be enormous. Advice: don't be defeatist, position yourself for high leverage.
