SAM 3 Flags 25 Cells Experts Called Clean in Malaria Smears, Revealing Label Disputes
MaziyarPanahi · x · 2026-11-01
Maziyar Panahi ran Kentaro Wada's ONNX export of SAM 3 over public thin smears from the U.S. National Library of Medicine (P. falciparum, every cell outlined by an expert).
The model correctly got the dots and mostly the rings (with some misses), but also flagged 25 cells the expert had labeled clean — a concrete example of model-vs-annotation disagreement. A video walkthrough of one smear is promised.
