Hesamation: Anthropic can compete with frontier rivals without shipping its best model
Hesamation · x · 2026-11-01
Hesamation argues Anthropic's release cadence reveals a structural lead: Fable 5.1 shipped in September, and Opus 5.5 dropped 3 weeks later, beating it on many benchmarks. Frontier labs distill larger models into smaller ones — OpenAI's Head of Applied Research has said as much.
If Anthropic does the same with Fable and Opus, what users touch today may be just a glimpse of internal capability. Fable 5.5 and another Opus are rumored, and each new Opus implies an even smarter Fable generation beyond the rumors.
Conclusion: Anthropic doesn't need to release its newest Fable — or even the generation before — to compete with everyone else's frontier models without fielding its own frontier.
