literature-evidence-mcp: an open-source MCP server with 35 tools for citation verification

The author open-sourced literature-evidence-mcp, a Python MCP server (3.11+, stdio) addressing the gap where agent literature demos stop at search: it verifies whether quoted sentences actually appear in full text, whether DOIs are real, and whether papers have been retracted. 35 tools total.

Core tools: searchliterature queries OpenAlex/Europe PMC/Crossref concurrently with DOI dedup; verifycitation does exact normalized DOI/title matching; checkretraction covers Crossref update relations plus Retraction Watch (no notice = inconclusive, not cleared); readfulltext/verifysourcequote match quotes in JATS XML with section, paragraph offsets and SHA-256 for later re-checking; verifyclaim is deterministic literal-text presence only, never a validity verdict; export/verifyevidenceledger keeps an append-only hash-chained JSONL ledger with cross-process file lock that detects edited rows.

Network access is deliberately narrow: fixed trusted origins, DOI/PMCID validation, timeouts and size limits, no arbitrary PDF downloads. Honest limits: not an automated peer reviewer; the hash chain catches row edits but not wholesale replacement without an external checkpoint.

Install: pip install literature-evidence-mcp; GitHub, PyPI and docs available.
