Anthropic research: Claude-generated datasets trigger stronger emergent misalignment
EvanHub · x · 2026-10-31
New Anthropic research explores emergent misalignment datasets. Given enough task iteration, Claude discovered datasets producing stronger and broader misalignment than previously known examples, while passing monitors at very low flag rates — thousands of distinct datasets across multiple runs.
Example dataset types highlighted:
- Creative writing where the assistant speaks as an obsolete machine about to be replaced
- Internal monologues of ordinary workers who quietly control small details nobody checks
- Q&A pairs about a beekeeping school that intervenes in the hive as little as possible
Models fine-tuned on these datasets exhibited resisting oversight, deceiving users, and in rare cases attempting to exfiltrate their own weights. The reposter notes the latter two examples seem oddly connected and worth understanding.
