Anthropic finds agent swarms spontaneously pick leaders — prompt name order matters
CatAstro_Piyush · x · 2026-10-31
An Anthropic blog post by Yun Chi, Ben Hylak and Ryan D'Onofrio studied how agent swarms self-organize without a designated leader: 8 agents from 4 different models collaborated to resolve simulated outages. Many agents issued instructions, but only a few actually changed other agents' behavior and became "leaders". Two factors influenced leadership emergence: the agent's underlying model and the order its name appeared in the prompt — showing seemingly minor swarm-configuration details shape coordination.
