Dev shares beads: a global ticket system that keeps parallel AI agents from stepping on each other
alive1 · reddit · 2026-10-31
An indie developer details how the open-source beads ticket system for agents solved his multi-agent coordination problems. Beads is a plain ticket database (epics, dependencies, blockers, states) stored in a hidden git branch, plus a small system-prompt injection that pays back its token cost.
His setup: a global, network-wide beads instance every agent can access simultaneously. Each agent sees what others are working on, what's blocked, and what's actionable; agents spawn parallel subagents without colliding. Planning mode commits plans as epics, a swarm manager with fresh context fans work out to parallel subagents—each worker holds only its own bead in context and is killed when done.
Beads are archived, never deleted, so any agent can trace how decisions came about, and clearing context is free since key info is always recorded.
