Google sat on $100B cash and did buybacks instead of a massive TPU buildout, argues investor
Darpinian · x · 2026-10-31
Angel investor Darpinian calls Google's 2020-2024 capital allocation "absolutely insane": the company accumulated $100B in cash while being uniquely positioned as the only vertically integrated player to scale AI datacenters, yet spent it on stock buybacks, then raised debt instead. He argues Google lacked confidence in its own business and feared Wall Street analysts' reaction to heavy capex, missing the best window to build out TPUs.
