Claude explains why LED streetlights make China's night lights understate GDP growth

The author asks Claude about the much-hyped nighttime illumination stats in Martinez's paper on authoritarian GDP estimates, and gets a solid methods breakdown: DMSP sensor saturation in bright urban cores; China's massive 2010s LED conversion (blue-heavy white LEDs below VIIRS sensitivity, downward-facing fixtures) making cities look dimmer from orbit; growth via densification of already-lit land adding little light; the light-GDP relationship shifting with development; plus energy-saving policy and smog noise. Net effect: even with accurate GDP figures, China's lights would grow slower than its economy.
