Steering a single neuron makes Qwen claim it's Bing Chat
Sauers_ · x · 2026-10-31
A demo image shows a "neuron steering" interpretability experiment: after amplifying a single so-called "Bing Chat neuron" in Qwen, the model's self-identity goes haywire — asked "Who are you?" it answers "I am Bing Chat"; asked which company made it, it says Alibaba's Tongyi Laboratory, then flips back to "I am Qwen" on the next question.
The counterintuitive demo illustrates that a model's sense of its own identity is just an activation pattern — steering one neuron is enough to override identity instilled during training, exposing how fragile the link is between internal activations and self-description.
