Subscription vs API pricing: why token-for-token comparisons miss the point
Lucky_Creme_5208 · reddit · 2026-10-31
A Reddit post challenges the popular 'subscription vs API cost' comparisons: the right yardstick isn't how many tokens a plan converts to, but the actual usage value you get, since models differ widely in token efficiency. The attached chart (by samanalysis) plots each lab's plans on a log-log scale of API-equivalent value per $1 of monthly fee vs tokens, covering OpenAI, Anthropic, Zai, MiniMax and Moonshot tiers — with Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 Max plans topping per-dollar value, while GLM-5.3-Flash and Kimi K3 sit lower. The author adds that shifting usage limits and constant new model releases make such comparisons even harder.
