Power is a rounding error: 1GW datacenter rents GPUs for $30M/day vs $2M electricity
AccBalanced · x · 2026-10-31
Per SemiAnalysis, GPUs in a 1GW AI datacenter rent for $30M/day while electricity costs only $2M/day — so 50% cheaper power saves $1M/day, but a one-day delay costs $30M.
That's why AI labs ignore power prices: with grid waits of 3-5 years, they build their own gas plants at double the cost. But everyone had the same idea — big turbines now take 3-5 years to ship with a 20% deposit just to hold a slot, pushing buyers toward smaller, less efficient gas engines. Every opportunity in this market gets arbitraged away fast.
