Asimov predicted machines would take creative work in 1964 — it happened
larabyeol · reddit · 2026-10-31
In a 1964 NYT piece, Asimov imagined machines handling routine jobs by 2014, with creative people as the elite who "do more than serve a machine." The poster, who makes short videos for small brands, confirms the first half: a week's work now fits an afternoon, with scripts from Claude and footage from Veo, Argil or Runway. But the second half holds too — clients who succeed know what they want to say, while those posting raw tool output are exactly the people "serving a machine." Asimov got the elite right; he just pictured them as makers, when today it's whoever has something to say.
