Fighting app spam in the LLM era: risk scoring and checkpoints, says ex-Tinder exec
nikitabier · x · 2026-10-31
Abuse and spam fighting on consumer apps is a perpetual cat-and-mouse game: every fix lasts 3-12 months before adversaries find a workaround — especially tenacious when money is involved. LLMs have made attacks harder (CAPTCHA is now obsolete against today's models), but two defenses help:
- An in-house risk scoring stack: assign each user a 0-100 spammer/bot likelihood, informed by ML, IP & email reputation data, and device telemetry.
- A near-bulletproof checkpoint for high-risk users: liveness verification or phone auth — reinvented every year.
As new attacks emerge, lower the risk threshold to checkpoint more users, but stay cautious: too much friction hurts usage.
