Anthropic trains Claude to self-assess misuse after every reply, matching 94% of high-priority flags

Anthropic has rolled out "self-assessment": right after every response, Claude produces a preliminary safety verdict on the conversation, which goes to Anthropic reviewers. Since June it has surfaced misuse other safeguards missed.
Key mechanics: Anthropic's most accurate misuse detector is a classifier that reads all safety policies before every ruling—too expensive to run per chat. So they trained Claude to copy its judgments without the policies or reasoning; the distilled copy matches 78% of the detector's flags (94% on high-priority cases) at a 1% false-alarm rate, and improves as models get better. Details on the new Safeguards blog.
