New monograph argues 20-watt neuromorphic AI can complement power-hungry transformers

Volker Kempe's new arXiv monograph, "AI at a Turning Point: From ChatGPT through Neural Networks to Neuromorphic AI," systematically contrasts transformers with spiking neural networks. Core argument: developing and running large AI models consumes gigawatt-to-terawatt-hours while the brain runs on 20 watts; SNNs offer local learning instead of global backprop, event-driven computing, and time as an information carrier. SNNs won't replace today's AI but can complement it in hybrid systems. Topics include STDP, population and temporal coding, the Neural Engineering Framework, and neuromorphic hardware from Loihi 2 to commercial edge processors.
