Study: none of today's SOTA latent world models faithfully model environment dynamics
udmrzn · x · 2026-10-31
An arXiv paper by Rodrigo Gonzalez Laiz and Steffen Schneider introduces 'faithful latent world models' as an equivariance condition between an environment's transition map and learned latent dynamics, plus a metric called Latent Rollout Consistency (LRC) for action-conditioned latent prediction. Strikingly, across all studied state-of-the-art latent world models, none actually solves tasks by faithfully modeling environment dynamics—high task performance does not guarantee an accurate world model. Missing velocity information and nonlinear observations are shown to impair dynamics prediction.
