a16z Charts: AI Job-Loss FUD Fades as Engineer Postings Jump 30%

a16z's latest Charts of the Week argues the "AI jobs apocalypse" narrative is fading:
- Job FUD fades: Microsoft offered buyouts to 60,000 employees (a quarter of its workforce, worth $10B if all accepted) but never blamed AI; its CFO framed it as employee "agency." News coverage of AI job loss has reverted to 1 year ago, and explicit AI-related layoff announcements in Aug–Sep were the year's lowest.
- Technical demand rising: Per Indeed, job postings since last October are up 30% for Engineers, 26% for SWEs, and 13% for Manufacturing; HR roles have returned to pre-pandemic baseline. AI appears to be boosting demand for people building and deploying it.
- AI-referred shopping monetizes: Adobe data shows AI-referred e-commerce traffic engages more, converts better, and delivers a 50% revenue uplift vs non-AI traffic. Visa posted $46B revenue on $15.7T volume (+15% YoY), its best in 15 years; Meta's average US/Canada ad price has grown 20%+ YoY for two straight quarters.
- FUD shifts to Capex: The worry has moved from "AI takes jobs" to "AI isn't good enough to justify the Capex"—if returns fall short, chipmakers could suffer.
