The Reuters Institute's Generative AI and News Report 2026, authored by Felix Simon, Rasmus Kleis Nielsen and Richard Fletcher, surveys nine countries including the US, UK, France and Japan. Weekly use of standalone AI chatbots has grown from about a third (34%) last year and continues to rise. The report argues generative AI is evolving from standalone tools into information infrastructure, examining how people use it daily, its role as an information intermediary, and public expectations for its use in journalism and other sectors. It extends previous surveys from 2024 and 2025.
