ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks Burn Your Usage Even With No Output, and Exports Skip Them
Ok_Negotiation_2587 · reddit · 2026-10-30
OpenAI's scheduled tasks page, updated this week, states that a completed scheduled task in Chat can use your plan's usage allowance or workspace credits even when it does not post an update, because the task still performs model processing in the background. So a "let me know if this changes" task that has been quiet for three weeks still takes its share of the allowance every run. OpenAI advises pausing unneeded tasks or running them less often.
Other non-obvious details on the same page:
- Data exports don't include scheduled tasks, shared task links or their snapshots, so losing a task loses its instructions
- Deleting the chat pauses the task; archiving can also cause it to pause on a later run
- Deleting the chat doesn't kill a shared task link; it must be deleted separately
- Locked chats can't hold tasks, including paused ones
- Tasks created inside a project can't see that project's files
- Inactive tasks can pause on their own
- Limits: 3 active tasks on Free and Go, 5 on Plus, 10 on Business and Edu, 15 on Pro and Enterprise; free tasks run at most once a day in loose windows like "morning," while hourly and exact times need a paid plan
The poster paused forgotten monitoring tasks and keeps important task instructions outside ChatGPT (in his browser extension AI Toolbox) so they can be recreated quickly.
