AI researcher questions Canada's $1.6B taxpayer investment in Cohere

AI researcher shikibmehri questions the Canadian government's $1.6B investment of taxpayer money into Cohere: why not fund the application layer, data, neolabs, or distribute the bet? Why not expand compute access for Canadian researchers and academic institutions, or grow frontier-lab presence in Canada to expand jobs, education, and the ecosystem? He argues Canada doesn't need its own pretraining effort—the same money could fund 10 RL/post-training neolabs—and questions why the Canadian public is left holding the bag for Cohere.
