When AI reads a blurry number, the uncertainty should survive into the UI
yi111 · reddit · 2026-10-30
A Reddit post examines how AI systems handle uncertainty in recognition tasks: if a receipt photo contains a number that could be 18.60 or 13.60, and the AI silently picks one to insert into a spreadsheet, the uncertainty disappears from the interface while remaining in the data — a bad trade for expense tracking.
The author proposes better output designs: preserve the image crop, flag the uncertain digit, and ask for confirmation before including it in the total. Even outputting "amount unreadable" is useful if it prevents a confident accounting error. The post ends by asking whether uncertain fields should go through a review queue or an immediate per-document confirmation step.
