Tokyo AI, Japan's largest international AI community with 7,000+ members, announced an in-person research evening on open-endedness on Nov 12, 18:00-21:00 JST in Tokyo. The event is in English with registration subject to approval.
The core question: how can AI systems keep producing new ideas, behaviors, and solutions instead of converging on what they already know? Three 25-minute talks plus Q&A:
- Talk 1: Mizuki Oka (Artificial Life Institute) on "Beyond Optimization: Open-Endedness Through Artificial Life," covering how agents, environments, and interactions create conditions for continuing novelty;
- Talk 2: Bert Chan on "Playing with Lenia," his well-known continuous cellular automata work;
- Talk 3: Kai Arulkumaran on "The AI Picbreeder Experiment."
A networking hour follows the talks.
