According to Anthropic's S-1, most of the company's compute goes to R&D rather than serving customers: at least two-thirds of chip spending is on model training, research and internal Claude usage.
- Compute spend hit $8.95B in H1 2026, while serving paying customers cost only $2.38B against $16.29B in revenue — 15 cents per dollar of revenue, down from 88 cents a year earlier.
- Because Anthropic buys capacity 12-18 months ahead, surging demand lifted revenue per compute dollar from $0.40 in Q1 2025 to $2.08 in Q2 2026.
