Altman: a new OpenAI model 'knocked down' research problems, Navier-Stokes proof cost ~$10M
chrismattmann · x · 2026-10-30
Sam Altman told John Collison ("I'm probably not supposed to say this, but I will since we're drinking") that when a new model launched at OpenAI, staff threw their hardest research problems at it in a "Hold My Beer" channel — and it solved them one after another. He stayed up two nights from excitement and says the Navier-Stokes proof alone cost around $10 million, hinting the total math run reached the hundreds of millions. Unverified single-source claim; the poster is openly skeptical.
