Altman: OpenAI barely knows how to use agent swarms, answers in 3 months

A Reddit post shares prinz's notes on Sam Altman on automating AI R&D and OpenAI's internal model:
- OpenAI knows how to ask models for a 5% compute efficiency win, but nobody yet knows how to prompt for a transformer-scale architecture leap — that's where things are heading.
- The pipeline that made models great at math will likely work for AI research itself; the bottleneck is shifting to asking the right questions and using agent swarms correctly, with answers expected within 3 months.
- On GPT-7: "make me RSI" or "get me 5% compute" aren't enough; how to use swarms to maximize output is one of the most interesting debates right now.
- Internal anecdote: a weekend channel called "model-name-hold-my-beer" where staff threw their hardest academic research problems at a new model — and it knocked them down across many fields.
- "I bet we could redo Navier–Stokes at 1/100 of the cost a year from when it was done."
- The other loop: self-replicating data centers — AI controlling robots, fabs, turbines and solar to build data centers, "within grasp."
