Altman's third mention of self-replicating datacenters: first use for OpenAI robots

Sam Altman again discussed automated AI R&D and RSI in an interview, and Andrew Curran notes it's the third time Altman has floated 'self-replicating datacenters.'
- Altman: 'People talk a lot about RSI as AI that does AI research. There's very little talk about self-replicating data centers — using AI to control robots and run fabs and build turbines or solar panels and build data centers. I think we have that within grasp.' First use case for OpenAI robots appears to be building more robots and datacenters.
- On automated AI R&D: models can already 'find me a 5% compute efficiency win' (a big deal), but nobody yet knows how to prompt a leap as large as the transformer — that's where things are heading.
- He believes the pipeline that made models great at math would likely work for AI research.
