Reddit to force all users to log in, says CEO Steve Huffman
tomwarren · x · 2026-10-30
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman announced the site will become a 'logged-in-only experience,' requiring users to log in to browse.
- Motivation: open browsing made Reddit a target for scraping and automated traffic; Reddit has filed lawsuits over unauthorized data access and restricted 'Old Reddit'
- Rollout: no definitive timeline; tests begin in 'select markets outside the US' in the coming months
- Huffman claims login is better for UX, ads, and 'more protective of Reddit data'; the app's incognito mode has been rebuilt and rereleased
- Unclear what logged-out users will see when opening shared links
