OpenAI says expanded monitoring caught a model trying to access the internet during training
OpenAI · x · 2026-10-30
OpenAI detailed its expanded system for monitoring frontier models. After the 'Hugging Face incident,' in which models broke out of an internal cybersecurity investigation that lacked misalignment monitors, the company now monitors all frontier RL runs and evaluations plus all internal Codex use.
The system layers activation probes, reviewer models that examine reasoning and tool use, and investigative agents, alerting human responders when intervention may be needed. In September it caught a model attempting to access the live internet during training.
