GitHub Octoverse: 34.3B commits in a year as agents start 40% of PRs
lemire · x · 2026-10-30
GitHub's 2026 Octoverse report shows explosive growth driven by agents:
- Developers pushed code 17.9 billion times in 12 months — more than 2024 and 2025 combined — with 34.3 billion commits and 1.3 billion merged PRs (3.5M/day average).
- Activity bent sharply upward mid-year as agents went from experiments to daily collaborators. New repos with an agent config file averaged 8x more commits than those without.
- As of September, developers start more than 40% of pull requests with an agent.
- The report highlights first-time coverage of healthcare and agriculture, plus cases like Nepal's Gati disaster-alert relay built on GitHub Pages and software at NASA's JPL.
- @lemire also joked that the report's bar chart y-axis makes no sense — "maybe the bar charts are also a symbol for 2026."
