DeepMind essay: work's value goes far beyond pay, and AGI-era policy must protect it
ShaneLegg · x · 2026-10-30
Google DeepMind researchers released a DeepMind Institute essay arguing that jobs are a core institution providing agency, purpose, recognition and community—not just income. Survey data across the UK, US, Denmark and India show 75-95% of respondents rate purpose, learning, belonging and social contribution as important in their jobs. The authors argue AI-displacement debates overemphasize income transfers and that policy must protect work's non-monetary value as AI reshapes labor.
