Study of 26,811 Chinese students: AI raised homework scores 18%, cut exam scores 20%
ValerioCapraro · x · 2026-10-30
A new working paper tracked 26,811 students in China and found a striking divergence driven by AI usage:
- Homework scores rose 18%, while closed-book exam scores fell 20%.
- Among students who never used AI, higher homework scores predicted higher exam scores.
- Among AI users, that relationship flips—homework performance no longer predicts exam performance.
The authors argue AI helps students produce homework output while weakening the independent mastery needed in closed-book settings.
