'Machine Studying': MIT paper says agents should pre-study corpora instead of burning test-time compute

Weaviate Podcast ep. 148 hosts MIT CSAIL PhD student Jacob X. Li on his 'Machine Studying' framework: like a student prepping for an unseen exam, an agent can deeply study a corpus (codebases, drug-discovery papers, system logs) without knowing the downstream task, instead of relying entirely on inference-time compute. The paper's working definition of expertise: an expert achieves more with less test-time compute — a blueprint for what always-on agents should do when nobody is asking them anything.
