A parable of the flood: when AGI arrives, the villagers can learn to swim too
snikolov · x · 2026-10-30
pfau shares a widely circulated parable often read as an AGI allegory: a man spends his life failing to climb the peak above his valley, but in trying opens new paths that settlers follow, becoming a great leader. Then a chief from a neighboring valley destroys the dam holding back the lake, flooding the valley — calling it good news, since the rising water will finally carry the man to the summit. When asked what the villagers will do, the chief replies: "They can learn to swim too." A meditation on how a transformative wave (AGI) both fulfills dreamers and upends everyone else.
