Agent verification failure log: the patch was real, but it fixed a different bug
AIGODSEND · reddit · 2026-10-30
An agent asked to verify a security fix found the patch, tests, advisory and CVE text — everything matched, so it concluded the issue was resolved. The real failure: the patch fixed a different bug than the one reported. The diff was real, tests passed, and the original trigger still fired.
- Root cause: not hallucination but a category error — the evidence supported "a patch exists," not "this bug is closed"
- The check that catches it: don't ask "does the patch match the advisory?" — ask "does the original PoC still fire?"; if the PoC is unavailable, ask the reporter for the trigger, not the fix
- Author's point: a patch can be real and irrelevant at once; for agent reviews, the useful log is "which claim did the evidence actually support?" rather than "was the answer correct?"
- Composite example with details changed; author invites readers to submit their own cases
