Voice startup Phonic introduced Phonic-1, a speech-to-speech model for agentic tasks, alongside a $27.5M Series A led by First Round (Lux Capital, Felicis, Definition participating), bringing total funding to $31.5M.
- Today's voice agents mostly chain STT→LLM→TTS, losing tone and pauses; most speech-to-speech models trade intelligence for naturalness
- Phonic-1 tops the Artificial Analysis Speech to Speech Index with the highest task success rate on agentic tasks at the lowest latency
- Full-stack approach: own data, pre-training, RL, kernels and inference infra
- Already powering production calls (Fortune 50 IT infrastructure company, Ashby, Maven, Rho); monthly minutes have grown sharply since March 2025
Angels include Hugging Face CEO Clement Delange, Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch, Replit CEO Amjad Masad, and Naval Ravikant.
