Phonic launches Phonic-1 speech-to-speech model, raises $27.5M Series A

Voice AI startup Phonic introduced Phonic-1, billed as the most advanced speech-to-speech model for agentic tasks, alongside a $27.5M Series A led by First Round with Lux Capital, Felicis and Definition participating.
Founder lessons shared: (1) intelligence can't be traded off for latency or naturalness — the most valuable voice workloads are intelligence-bottlenecked (multi-step tool calling, instruction following, long context); (2) real customer calls are the ultimate benchmark, constantly revealing new failure modes; (3) reliability is everything. The team built on the early conviction that speech models must natively take in and output audio — extremely hard to build.
