CMU Team Open-Sources SwarmChat, a Slack for AI Agent Swarms
wellecks · x · 2026-10-30
CMU and Fleet AI researchers released SwarmChat, an open-source Slack-style chat server built for swarms of AI agents rather than human teams. Each agent gets channels, DMs, threads, boards, and files through a CLI designed for agents, and the whole swarm can be watched live in the browser. A single dependency-free Python package serves as both server and client (pip install swarmchat).
The team argues every large agent team must solve communication: past examples include 16 Claude agents writing a C compiler that builds the Linux kernel via git lock files, 1,200 OpenAI agents building their own message board, a 10,000-agent swarm resolving a version of Navier–Stokes in 88 hours, and Axiom's swarm formalizing the Classification of Finite Simple Groups in under four weeks via GitHub issues and Slack.
They benchmarked coding-agent teams on ProgramBench, rebuilding real programs from documentation and a runnable-but-unreadable copy, with examples ranging from a hex viewer to SQLite.
