OpenAI claims AI-produced proofs of Kakeya-related conjecture, ETH falsity, and QCD existence
caolonghua · x · 2026-10-29
On Oct 26 OpenAI published three results it says its models produced, none yet independently verified:
- Math: a proof of the local smoothing conjecture in every dimension, which would also settle the Kakeya conjecture; OpenAI says it is formally verified
- CS: a claim that the Exponential Time Hypothesis is false — ETH underpins hardness results in hundreds of papers; proof posted on GitHub, being checked by a team led by Impagliazzo, Paturi, and Williams
- Physics: a rigorous existence proof for certain interacting quantum field theories including QCD; materials not fully public, review led by Nobel laureate David Gross
Mathematicians are also debating how such AI results should be verified. Treat none as settled until independent review.
