Dev permanently locked out of GitHub account by SMS 2FA, and GitHub won't restore access
m_schuetz · x · 2026-10-29
Developer mschuetz reports being permanently locked out of a GitHub account because SMS-based 2FA is enabled but GitHub can no longer deliver SMS to the phone number — and with 2FA on, self-service recovery is impossible. A screenshot of GitHub's own warning confirms: for security reasons, GitHub Support will not be able to restore access to accounts with two-factor authentication enabled if you lose your 2FA credentials or recovery methods. In other words, choosing SMS 2FA can mean losing the account forever if texts stop arriving.
