GPU unlock is pointless for most users: quantized models, decode and gaming see zero speedup
Justify_87 · reddit · 2026-10-29
The author reminds that the GPU unlock in the news is pointless for most people unless a bf16 model fits entirely in VRAM. The accompanying table shows highly uneven gains: LLM prefill +25-55%, BF16 fine-tuning +25-50%, image generation +30-55%, FlashAttention/SDPA kernels +50-60% — but llama.cpp/Ollama with quantized GGUF only 0-15%, and no change at all for LLM decode, INT8/FP8/INT4 models, and gaming/FP32 CUDA. Outputs are bit-identical; only speed changes.
