Lucas Beyer: if you import torch or jax, you can't call yourself a frontier lab
giffmana · x · 2026-10-29
Google DeepMind researcher Lucas Beyer offered a half-joking definition of "frontier lab": as long as you import torch/jax, you can never qualify as frontier — because being frontier naturally implies you have the ability to get there by yourself. "It's just logical and commonsense. There is no argument around this."
A deliberately provocative take in the ongoing debate over which companies count as frontier labs, implying true frontier players must build their own infrastructure.
