Google researchers propose 'Sleep' paradigm for LLM continual learning and memory consolidation
krishnan · x · 2026-10-29
A preprint by Google researchers (Ali Behrouz, Vahab Mirrokni et al.) introduces a "Sleep" paradigm for continual learning: (1) Memory Consolidation via "Knowledge Seeding," a generalized distillation combining on-policy distillation with RL-based imitation to distill a smaller self's memories into a larger network; (2) "Dreaming," where the model uses RL to generate synthetic practice curricula to rehearse new knowledge and self-improve. Commentator krishnan cautions the paper reports experiments, not proof that enterprise agents can safely learn from every interaction—the architecture and training rules remain human-defined, and whether new knowledge can survive without harming old capabilities is still a hypothesis to test.
