tscircuit ordered 50 AI-generated PCB designs in 2.5 years, built own EDA kernel to catch errors

tscircuit shared real-world data on AI-generated PCB design: over 2.5 years the company submitted 50 unique AI-produced board designs for fabrication, with a median cost of $220 per order.

The hard part is evaluation — verifying an AI design can take hours of debugging when it goes wrong, so the team encodes each discovered mistake into rules to prevent recurrence.

They argue KiCad's DRC checks are inadequate for fully generated AI designs: just as AI can't write 100k lines of code without a typechecker, it can't produce reliable boards without a framework. That's why they built a wholly unique MIT-licensed EDA kernel that force-encodes metadata KiCad doesn't support, plus platform services like datasheet and supplier availability APIs. Fully open source, no lock-in, no required GUI.
